Santos and de Paula Continue Winning Ways at Brazil Open

PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil, December 20. NICHOLAS Santos and Daynara de Paula added to their qualifying events for the Pan Pacific championships on Thursday night at the Brazil Open, with a close men’s 100 fly highlighting the finals session.

Fresh off an impressive win in the 50 butterfly on Wednesday with a time that would have won the world championship title, Nicholas Santos won the 100 fly with a 53.06 in a close five-way battle for the win. Henrique Rodgrigues (53.10), Henrique Martins (53.46), Filipe Nunes (53.53) and Fernando Silva (53.56) rounded out the top five. Notably, the top 12 finishers all beat the Pan Pacific qualifying time of 55.57.

Daynara de Paula won the women’s 100 fly convincingly with a 58.35 to beat her own meet record of 58.96 from 2009, and dip under the Pan Pac qualifying time of 58.89.

Other winners on Thursday include:

Jessica Cavalheiro in the women’s 200 free with a 2:01.30;

Joao Amorim in the men’s 200 free with a 1:50.07, not as fast as the 1:49.82 put up in prelims by world championships competitor Nicolas Oliveira, who scratched from the final. Fernando Pires swam a 1:49.92 in prelims, but settled for second in the final with a 1:50.12;

Natalia de Luccas in the women’s 200 backstroke with a 2:14.43;

Leonardo de Deus in the men’s 200 back with a 1:59.07;

Julia Gerotto in the women’s 400 IM with a 4:53.22;

Thiago Simon in the men’s 400 IM with a 4:19.74.
