Two More Wins For Mireia Belmonte Garcia in Spain

CASTELLON, Spain, December 1. MIREIA Belmonte Garcia kept on steamrolling through an amazing meet that included the world record in the 1500 free on day one of the Spanish Open Short Course Championships.

Belmonte, who stands sixth in the world with a 2:06.79 from the Beijing stop of the FINA World Cup in the women’s 200 IM, won the finale tonight in 2:09.09. Beatriz Gomez Cortes took second in 2:10.93, while Catalina Corro Lorente clinched third in 2:12.53.

Belmonte closed out her weekend with a meet-record time of 8:11.19 in the women’s 800 free. That swim blasted Melani Costa Schmid’s 2011 record of 8:14.95, but was well back of Belmonte’s world record of 7:59.34 from the Berlin stop of the FINA World Cup. Costa Schmid took second in 8:20.70, while Maria Vilas Vidal rounded out the top three in 8:24.41.

Mercedes Peris Minguet touched out Judit Ignacio Sorribes in the women’s 50 fly, 27.70 to 27.72, to kick off the final session of the meet. Carla Campo Casajus wound up third overall in the sprint fly with a time of 27.97. Miguel Ortiz followed with a 23.22 to win the men’s 50 fly, while Poland’s Konrad Czerniak finished second in 23.64. Rafael Munoz Perez, the national record holder with a 22.33 from 2008, placed third in 23.65.

Santos Manancas Da Silva popped a 1:58.10 to win the men’s 200 IM, while Marc Sanchez Torrens took second in 1:58.63. Alan Cabello Forns picked up third-place honors in 1:59.19.
