Federica Pellegrini Takes Down Second Italian Record in Viareggio

VIAREGGIO, Italy, November 23. A day after taking down the women’s 200-meter backstroke Italian record in short course competition, Federica Pellegrini crushed the 100-meter free mark here in Viareggio.

Pellegrini won the 100 free in 52.86 (26.18, 26.68) to become the first Italian woman under 53 seconds as she downed the Italian record of 53.58 set by Erika Ferraioli back in 2011. Pellegrini’s time nearly moved her into the top 10 in the world anchored by Veronika Popova with a 52.58 from Kazan. Ferraioli placed a distant second in 54.58, while Alice Mizzau finished third in 54.84.

Gregorio Paltrinieri, who holds the top ranked time in the world with a 14:27.65 from the Eindhoven stop of the FINA World Cup, cruised to a win in the men’s 1500 free with a 14:45.34. Rocco Potenza touched second in 14:49.67, while Gabriele Detti earned third in 15:00.17

In other action, Alessia Polieri touched out Stefania Pirozzi, 2:07.10 to 2:07.16, in the women’s 200-meter fly. Ilaria Bianchi, meanwhile, took third in 2:07.31. Damiano Lestingi topped the men’s 200 back in 1:54.13, while Luca Mencarini touched second in 1:54.68. Christopher Ciccarese wound up third in 1:54.78.

In another close finish, Lisa Fissneider captured the women’s 200-meter breast in 2:23.14, while Giulia De Ascentis placed second in 2:23.69. Elisa Celli picked up third in 2:23.83. Elene Gemo won the women’s 100 back in 58.91, while Arianna Barbieri took second in 59.60. Carlotta Zofkova placed third in 1:00.02.

King Shark Federico Bocchia touched out Marco Orsi by the slimmest of margins, 21.49 to 21.50, in the men’s 50 free finale. That’s just a bit outside the top 10 in the world currently anchored by Sergey Fesikov with a 21.29 from Kazan. Andrey Govorov took third in 21.56.

Laura Letrari rolled to victory in the women’s 100 IM with a 1:01.63, while Camilla Dal Rio picked up second in 1:02.28. Carlotta Toni wound up third in 1:03.97. Federico Turrini won the men’s 200 IM in 1:56.12, while Stefano Pizzamiglio took second in 1:56.71. Simone Geni rounded out the top three in 1:57.38.
