Swimming World Throwback Thursday Video: Bobby Hurley’s World Record in 2008

PHOENIX, Arizona, November 7. THE FINA World Cup meets seem to be tailor-made for people like Australian Bobby Hurley, since he has talents in more than one stroke and distance.

Hurley was impressive earlier this week in the Singapore stop of the World Cup, getting on the podium in the middle-distance freestyles and the sprint backstrokes. The biggest moment of the meet was likely his participation in the mixed 200 medley relay, where he set a world record with Christian Sprenger, Alicia Coutts and Cate Campbell.

It’s not Hurley’s first world record. Back in October 2008, Hurley surprised the world with a stunning 23.24 in the 50 short course meters backstroke, breaking Thomas Rupprath’s four-year-old record by three hundredths of a second.

As with many of the world records set in 2008 and 2009 during the era of the polyurethane suits, Hurley’s record did not last long. Peter Marshall swam a 23.05 two weeks later.

We’re excited to help relive Hurley’s shining moment in today’s Throwback Thursday video:
