Ranomi Kromowidjojo Speaks With European Short Course Championship Organizers Before Meet

HERNING, Denmark, November 4. RANOMI Kromowidjojo (NED) is just 23 years old and has already accomplished to win several medals at the Olympics, World Championships and European championships. Read about her expectations and preparations towards the European SC Championships in Herning, Denmark below.

Last year you became a double Olympic champion winning 50m and 100m freestyle. This year you won the 50m freestyle and came third in the 100m freestyle at the World championships in Barcelona and just shortly after the World Championships, you swam World Cup in Eindhoven where you broke the world record in 50m free. What are your expectations to this year’s European Short Course Championships?
– I’m really looking forward to swim the European Championship Short Course. Because the last 2 years my focus was totally on the Olympics and the Worlds, I mostly swam long course. So I feel that I can improve in my personal best times also in Short Course.

I assume that your preparations towards the European Championships are being made as we speak. With about one month to the European Championships, how does a typical practise day look for you?
– That depends on the day, but during an average practice day I train in the morning about 1.5 hours in the pool, afterwards in the gym. Then I have lunch, take a short rest and swim another 1.5 hours in the afternoon. Besides this I do twice a week core stability training.

Which races will you be competing in at the European Championships in Herning 2013? And can you point out a single race that you are having greater expectations to than the others, why?
– My focus will be on the 50 and 100 free. Depending on our team I’ll also swim the relay. My favourite distance is always the 100 free, for me that distance counts the most because of the strong competition and long history on this distance.

Besides your coach, who is the first you call or talk to after a fantastic race?
– My parents, brother, granny and of course my boyfriend are very important for me. Because I can reach my mother mostly the easiest, I normally call her first after a good race. To share my experience and happiness! But during the World Championship my boyfriend was commentator for Eurosport, so he was interviewing swimmers at the finish. The first person within my inner circle in these circumstances was obviously him ;-)!

Have you ever been in Denmark and do you think that it will make any difference for you that the European Championships is hold in Denmark this year?
– No, I have never been to Denmark. So I’m really looking forward to come over to Denmark and swim the Europeans. That it’s new for me always inspires me, so hopefully I can improve myself during this competition.

Thank you for the interview, Ranomi — we wish you the best of luck at the LEN European SC Championships 2013.
