Arjun Muralidharan, India’s Swimming Legend, Gets Two-Year Doping Suspension

PHOENIX, Arizona, October 29. ARJUN Muralidharan, once a multi-national record holder, has been handed a two-year doping suspension after testing positive for the stimulant Methylhexaneamine.

Muralidharan’s positive test came at the All India Police Aquatics Championships this past March, but the suspension did not begin until last Friday. Methylhexaneamine can be found mostly in nasal decongestants or in dietary supplements, and is under suspicion by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Muralidharan, 26, spent most of his time training in Canada, where he earned the distinction of winning his country’s first swimming medal on foreign soil, placing third in the 200 fly at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2004.

Muralidharan held all three long course butterfly records in the mid-2000s, but those records have since been broken. Muralidharan’s last major competition was the South Asian Games in 2010.
