Princess Charlene of Monaco Back in the Swim of Things

SAINT GEOURS DE MAREMNE, France, September 1. OLYMPIC swimmer Princess Charlene of Monaco got back in the water for a water safety charity event today according to the Daily Mail.

Charlene Wittstock, who represented South Africa in the 2000 Olympics before later marrying Albert II, the Prince of Monaco in 2011, took part in a Live to Swim event in France today along with a group of children in a charity event to shine the light on learn to swim initiatives in the area.

Overall, around 150 children participated with the Princess serving as one of the instructors on the day.

“Some of my present and future projects for my foundation are underlining the importance and reinforcing the awareness of water safety,” the Princess wrote on her foundation’s website. “We are all aware of horrible stories about small children drowning because they could not swim. Teaching them how to swim could save their lives, and the importance and awareness will help them to feel more comfortable and confident in all aquatic areas as well.”

Wittstock, who retired from competitive swimming in 2007 after helping South Africa to fifth in the 400 medley relay at the 2000 Olympics, continues to help support the sport in her position as the Princess of Monaco. According to the Daily Mail, she is “set to donate a ‘large amount'” to swimming in her hometown of Durban, South Africa.
