Disagreement With Virginia Causes Andrea D’Arrigo to Transfer to Florida

GAINESVILLE, Florida, August 23. THE University of Florida confirmed today that a new member of the freshman class will be joining the roster in a couple of weeks, with local sensation Andrea D’Arrigo set to attend the school after a row with the University of Virginia caused him to break his agreement to be a Cavalier.

D’Arrigo was set to start his college career at Virginia, but he was planning to first attend the world junior championships, which start Monday in Dubai. Various administrators at Virginia were not happy with D’Arrigo potentially missing so many classes while racing in the United Arab Emirates, and had denied him permission to swim in the meet. D’Arrigo wrote on his website that after some consideration he decided to return to Gainesville, where he lived as a teenager after moving from Italy.

D’Arrigo’s best events are the 200 and 400 long course freestyles, with best times of 1:48.91 and 3:49.28. Though not always an accurate indicator, his 400 freestyle time, when converted into short course yards, would rank in the top three among collegiate swimmers.

“We feel like he can be the best middle distance freshman in the entire country,” Florida head coach Gregg Troy said. “We are lucky to have him on the team.”

D’Arrigo is racing the 100, 200 and 400 freestyles in Dubai.
