BARCELONA, Spain, July 25. AFTER a few days of back and forth negotiations within the German team, Olympic gold medalist Britta Steffen has now officially declined to swim the 50 freestyle at the World Championships in Barcelona.

The decision was confirmed this morning by a press release from the German swimming association -- DSV, quoting a statement from National Coach Henning Lambertz that the decision was made after a talk with the swimmers, coaches and sports director Lutz Buschkow.

Qualified Daniela Schreiber had offered to withdraw from the race to give Steffen a chance at winning a medal in her best event one and a half weeks ago, but will now swim both the 50 and 100 freestyle, along with the 4x100 freestyle relay, which leaves Steffen with a place in the 100 freestyle and 4x100 freestyle relay alongside her.

Steffen herself has not given a statement on her decision yet.
