BARCELONA, Spain, July 20. THE German National Team could be looking at scratching Olympic gold medalist Britta Steffen into the 50-meter freestyle next week in Barcelona.

During a conversation today with Handelsblatt at the open water swimming event, German coach Henning Lambertz discussed the possibility of Daniela Schreiber scratching the 50 free in advance to give Steffen a shot at a medal in the splash-and-dash.

With Schreiber stating that she's better at the 100-meter freestyle, she does not want to stand in the way of Steffen swimming for a potential world title.

Steffen had been unable to qualify for the 50 free during German Trials due to an illness.
