KAZAN, Russia, July 17, 2013. WHAT a day! Ashley Twichell, USA, blew the field away winning the women's 10KM open water race in a time of 2:05:00.9 by over :30 seconds. In second place, Aurora Ponsele, ITA, hit the finish line with a time of 2:05:31.9 and in third was Karla Sitic, CRO, 2:05:32.1.

The chase group was tightly packed for second through fifth place shadowing the leader in the bubble trail throughout the race, both lead swimmer Twichell and the pursuit group pulled out and away, leaving the main group over a minute behind. In fourth was team mate Emily Brunnemann, USA, 2:05:32.8, and fifth was Jessica Walker, AUS, 2:05:34.4.

Twichell, USA, was unrelenting. In a battle of wills, Twichell never broke. It was gold to Ashely Twichell, USA. Silver to Aurora Ponsele, ITA. And Karla Sitic, CRO won the bronze.

With the death of Fran Crippen, USA, only a couple years ago, this morning there were no official reports on the water temperature, currents, wind speed, wind direction posted before or during the race making reporting more difficult regarding coach/swimmer race strategies and there is a question, if the swimmers themselves knew what to expect over each segment of the race course.

Men's 10KM Open Water
The men's 10KM open water was a close race over the entire course won by Matteo Furlan, ITA, in 1:56:12.4. Right behind him, only an arm stretch away at the finish was Romain Beraud, FRA, 1:56:14.4, and Andreas Waschburger, GER, finishing third with a time of 1:56:16.3.

Fourth went to Charlie Cuignet, FRA, 1:56:33.8, fifth Victor Colonese, BRA, 1:56:38.2.

Virtually all top three finishers were reaching for the finish at the same time. The final push in the home stretch was broken down into the lead group of Furlan, Beraud, Waschburger followed by the pursuit group of Cuignet and Colonese nearly :40 seconds in front of the main field.

It was a grueling race over the 10km course with the lead changing a few times. Ryan Feeley, USA, finished 10th with a time of 1:57:41.9. Joey Pedraza, USA, finished 14th, with a time of 1:58:14.4.
