SHEFFIELD, England, July 1. PLENTY of shockers took place at the British world championship trials recently, and one of them was the exclusion of reigning world champion Liam Tancock from the roster.

Tancock, who recently raced in the Olympic final of the 100 backstroke, placed second in that event but could not get under the tougher qualifying time of 53.98 Great Britain set to get swimmers on the squad. Though he swam faster than the British qualifying time in the 50 backstroke, his inability to make the team in the Olympic distance meant he could not swim the non-Olympic 50 back in Barcelona and defend his world title. Five other swimmers found themselves in that situation, posting quick times in non-Olympic events but not qualifying in Olympic distances.
Fans of American collegiate swimming will recognize the name Adam Brown, the former Auburn University standout who contributed big points for Tigers in the sprint freestyles. Brown is enjoying a bit of a career resurgence, posting lifetime bests to get on the world championship team in the 50 and 100 freestyles. Unfortunately, Brown could not bring three other fast 100 freestylers along with him, as the time the top four in the event in Sheffield posted was not fast enough to qualify for worlds.
Jazz Carlin will be busy on the women's side, racing in the 400, 800 and 1500 freestyles in Barcelona. And Olympic silver medalist Michael Jamieson put the world record in the 200 breast on notice, and let the rest of his competition know that he's the one to beat in the race at worlds.
Jak Scott is listed on the world championship roster as an alternate for the only relay that qualified for worlds, the men's 800 free relay. He will likely handle prelim duties for Robbie Renwick, who was the only qualifier in the individual 200 free.
Great Britain set a limit of 30 swimmers to take to worlds, citing financial setbacks. Below is the official roster Great Britain released today:
