Jazmin Carlin Makes Run at 1500 Free World, Euro Record

SHEFFIELD, Great Britain, June 28. JAZMIN Carlin became the first British swimmer to break 16:00 as she made a run at both the World and European records in the women's 1500-meter freestyle events at the British Swimming Championships.

Carlin scorched the metric mile with an astonishing time of 15:47.26. That ranks her fourth all time in the world behind only Kate Ziegler (15:42.54), Alessia Filippi (15:44.93) and Lotte Friis (15:46.30). She obliterated the previous British record of 16:06.67 set by Keri-Anne Payne back in 2011 in Manchester. Incidentally, Carlin also demolished the previous top-ranked swim in the world this year of 16:01.41 by Friis from France in March.

Carlin's best international outing came by way of a bronze medal at the 2009 World Championships in the 800-meter freestyle relay. Up until today, she hasn't been seen as a world-title threat. With her scorching time of 8:18.58 in the 800-meter freestyle last night, and this stunning performance today — that's definitely changed.

Her effort also represents a jaw-dropping time drop as her previous best came from the British Gas International Meet in March, when she posted a 16:18.80. Carlin just thrust herself to the top of the distance freestyle heap with two days of swimming in Sheffield.

In other action, Edinburgh's Michael Jamieson vaulted to the top of the world in the men's 200-meter breaststroke with a 2:07.78. That swim picked up the gauntlet that American Kevin Cordes had thrown down with a 2:08.34 earlier this week at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. Andrew Willis of Bracknell secured the second Barcelona spot with a sizzling 2:08.59 to skyrocket to third in the world, while Robert Holderness of Millfield claimed third in 2:10.61.

Sheffield went 1-2 in the women's 200-meter free with Eleanor Faulker (1:58.42) and Rebecca Turner (1:58.88) earning the top two times of the finale. Neither swimmer cleared Britain's tough 1:57.98 cut to qualify individually. Caitlin McClatchey (1:59.29) and Anne Bochmann (2:00.18) placed third and fourth in the event.

Glasgow's Robert Renwick checked in with a Worlds-qualifying time of 1:46.63 to win the men's 200-meter free. Ieuan Lloyd (1:48.05), James Guy (1:48.29) and Joshua Walsh 1:48.33) finished second through fourth in the finale.

Ben Proud sprinted his way to the top three in the world in the men's 50-meter fly with a 23.10. He now trails only Fred Bousquet (23.00) and Nicholas Santos (23.05) this year, and is on his way to Barcelona to contend with the best. James Dollan (24.21) and Jamie Graham (24.27) placed second and third in the sprint event.

Stacey Tadd (31.75) and Kathryn Johnstone (31.77) just missed the British standard to make Worlds in the women's 50-meter breast, while Sophie Taylor wound up third in 31.87. Meanwhile, in the closest finish of the night, Marco Loughran (25.03) and Liam Tancock (25.04) both cleared the British requirement in the men's 500-meter back for Worlds, while Luke Wood settled for a distant third in 25.90.

In multi-class events, Matthew Walker topped the men's 50-meter fly S7 in 32.74, while Andrew Mullen claimed the men's 50-meter fly S5 in 40.10. Jessica-Jane Applegate paced the women's 200-meter IM SM14 in 2:34.69, while Eleanor Simmonds clocked a 3:11.45 in the women's 200-meter IM SM6. Amy Marren turned in a 2:35.19 to lead the women's 200-meter IM SM9, while Harriet Lee won the women's 200-meter IM SM10.

In semifinals, Jemma Lowe battered the women's 100-meter fly in 58.18 , while Daniel Wallace touched out Roberto Pavoni, 1:59.80 to 1:59.82, for the men's 200-meter IM top seed. Siobhan-Marie O'Connor claimed the top seed in the women's 200-meter IM in 2:12.27, while Georgia Davies clocked a 1:00.45 to pace the women's 100-meter back.
