Canada, Great Britain Announce Short Course Worlds Swim Rosters

PHOENIX, Arizona, October 30. A new generation of top-level swimmers from Canada and Great Britain are set to race among the world's best in December at the FINA short course world championships in Istanbul, Turkey.

With Canada's Brent Hayden (Olympic bronze, 100 free) now retired and Ryan Cochrane (Olympic silver, 1500 free) electing to sit out the short course championships, Canada will be looking to a younger group of 14 athletes to shine in Istanbul. Leading the group will likely be Brittany MacLean and Martha McCabe, both of whom made the finals of their respective individual events at the London Olympics. MacLean was seventh in the 400 free, while McCabe finished fifth in the 200 breast. Tera van Beilen could also be a standout for Canada, having finished ninth in the 100 breast in London after losing a swimoff for a spot in the final.

On the men's side for Canada, Jake Tapp should be a familiar name for those who follow collegiate swimming in the United States. Tapp swam for the University of Arizona, helping the Wildcats win the team title in 2008, the same year he represented Canada at the Olympics. Also representing Canada will be Chantal van Landegham, who is currently swimming at the University of Georgia.

Great Britain's top swimmer in Turkey will undoubtedly be Michael Jamieson, who came close to capturing gold in the 200 breast in London. Jamieson will be the only 2012 Olympic medalist on the team, but not the only superstar. Olympic finalists Hannah Miley (200 and 400 IM) and Fran Halsall (50 and 100 free) are slated to participate.

Great Britain's squad will feature five other swimmers who competed in the Olympic final: Robbie Renwick (200 free), Andrew Willis (200 breast), Daniel Fogg (1500 free), Jemma Lowe (200 fly) and Elizabeth Simmonds (200 back).

Tom Johnson and Jozsef Nagy will be the head coaches for the Canadian team, while David McNulty will lead the British team.

Canada's short course worlds roster:

Coleman Allan, Warren Barnes, Zach Chetrat, Brittany MacLean, Heather MacLean, Martha McCabe, Luke Peddie, Andrew Poznikoff, Katerine Savard, Jake Tapp, Noemie Thomas, Tera van Beilen, Chantal van Landegham

Great Britain's short course worlds roster:

Sophie Allen, Craig Benson, Jazmin Carlin, Georgia Davies, Eleanor Faulkner, Daniel Fogg, Francesca Halsall, Georgia Hohmann, Michael Jamieson, Matthew Johnson, Ieuan Lloyd, Jemma Lowe, Hannah Miley, Roberto Pavoni, Robbie Renwick, Elizabeth Simmonds, Rebecca Turner, Chris Walker-Hebborn, Andrew Willis
