African Long Course Championships: Lehesta Kemp Steamrolls to Sixth, Seventh Titles -- September 15, 2012

NAIROBI, Kenya, September 15. THE African Long Course Championships have been a breakout meet for South Africa's Lehesta Kemp, as she raced to her sixth and seventh gold medals of the meet this evening in Kenya.

Lehesta Kemp kept on rolling with her sixth victory of the meet. She checked in with a near meet-record time of 26.08 to win the women's 50 free. Egypt's Mai Atef Abdelfatta placed second in 27.24, while teammate Hossam El Badri Rowan finished third in 27.35. Kemp returned in the women's 400 medley relay for her stunning seventh triumph in Kenya. South Africa's Nathania Van Niekerk, Tara Nicholas, Mandy Loots and Kemp topped the relay in 4:18.31. Egypt's Hania Hany Abdelhamid, Mai Atef Abdelfatta, Marym Rahman El Sayed and Hossam El Badri Rowan finished second in 4:29.08. Algeria's Amel Melih, Nesrine Khelifati, Fella Bennaceur and Amel Lalla earned bronze in 4:34.61.

Egypt went 1-2 in the men's 200 fly as Ahmed Akram Abbas, 15, and Marawan Adel Osman finished first and second in 2:04.92 and 2:05.35. South Africa's Myles Brown turned in a third-place time of 2:05.45. Brown bounced back in the men's 1500 free with a winning time of 16:04.69. Egypt's Ali Morsy Alam Marwan Ahmed finished second in 16:25.48, while Angola's Pedro Pinotes touched third in 16:45.60.


Mandy Loots, still going strong at 34 years old, dominated the women's 200 IM finale in 2:2055. South African compatriot Rene Warnes touched second in 2:22.60, while Egypt's Rowida Hesham Mohamed Tolba touched third in 2:26.05.

South Africa's Ricky Ellis earned the men's 100 back title in 57.75, while Tunisia's Taki Mrabet finished second in 58.76. South Africa's Michael Meyer posted a 59.42 to edge Egypt's Omar Mahmoud Abo El Soud (59.56) for the final podium spot.
