Chinese University Games: Sun Yang Snags Third Freestyle Victory

TIANJIN, China, September 15. AFTER a day of rest, Chinese superstar Sun Yang returned to capture his third gold medal of the Chinese University Games being held in Tianjin.

Sun, the first male multiple Olympic medalist in Chinese history with four medals including two gold at the 2012 London Olympics, swept his freestyle events at the Chinese University Games today with a 7:44.40 to capture the men's 800-meter freestyle title. That bettered his previous best time from this year of 7:45.45 clocked at the London Olympic en route to his sterling world record of 14:31.02 in the men's 1500 free. Earlier this week, Sun already won the 200 free in 1:47.15 and 400 free in 3:47.23, as well as took silver in the men's 800 free relay as part of Zhejiang University's relay.

Cheng Feiyi followed with a 25.21 to win the men's 50 back. That swim jumped Cheng to 17th in the world rankings this year. Sun Xiaolei placed second in 25.75, while Duan Qiong earned third in 26.09. Zhao Jing jumped into the top 10 in the world with a 10th-ranked time of 28.10 to win the women's 50 back. Fu Yuanhui, who already charted a 27.95 in April, placed second in 28.11. Luan Xiaoxuan earned third in 28.84.

Tang Yi topped the women's 100 free in 55.03, while Guo Junjun placed second in 55.81. Wang Shijia turned in a 55.97 to take third in the event. Lu Zhiwu followed with a 49.50 to 49.82 victory over Shi Tengfei in the men's 100 free, while 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Zhang Lin continued to struggle with a 30th-place 54.77.

While Akihiro Yamaguchi was stunning the swimming world in Japan with a world record in the 200-meter breaststroke, Li Xiang clipped Huang Chaosheng in the distance breaststroke event, 2:12.12 to 2:12.23. Liu Hongjiao touched in 2:27.84 to capture the women's 200 breast title, while Shi Jinglin earned second-place honors in 2:28.04. Zhang Ying rounded out the podium with a 2:33.34.
