Chinese University Games: Sun Yang Turns in Meet Record in 200 Free Updated

TIANJIN, China, September 12. ZHEJIANG University's Sun Yang opened the Chinese University Games with a meet-record time of 1:47.15 in the men's 200 free. That represents a strong tune-up swim after taking some time off from the sport after the 2012 London Olympics where he pocketed a pair of gold medals as well as a silver and a bronze to become the most decorate male Chinese swimmer of all time. Earlier in the day, Sun posted a 1:50.26 as the top qualifier in the event. Li Yunqi (1:50.00) and Li Yusen (1:50.29) finished second and third in the finale.

Sun is entered in six events this week, competing in the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle events as well as three relays. Other notables competing in Tianjin are Zhang Lin in the 100 and 200 free, as well as Liu Zige, Lu Ying and Tang Yi. Other Olympic medalists also in attendance are Zheng Fenglin, Cheng Feiyi, Li Xuanxu, Pang Jiaying and Zhu Qianwei.

Zhang, the first Chinese male swimmer to earn an Olympic medal with a silver in the 1500 free in Beijing, continued his struggles this year after missing the Olympic roster for London. Zhang wound up taking 22nd in 200 free today with a 1:57.81.

Tang Yi topped the women's 200 free in 1:59.37, while Wang Shijia (1:59.89) and Guo Junjun (1:59.90) earned second and third. Huang Chaosheng touched out Yang Zhixian in the men's 400 IM, 4:12.64 to 4:12.84. Wang Chengxiang placed third in 4:16.64.

Li Xuanxi took home the women's 400 IM title in 4:40.60, while Zhu Xiaoya finished second in 4:48.13. Zheng Rongrong earned third in 4;52.63. Ma Xiang captured the men's 100 breast title in 1:01.36 with Wang Shuai earning second in 1:01.98. Xie Zhi picked up third in 1:02.41. Zhao Jin closed out the night with a 1:09.54 to win the women's 100 breast. Zhang Ying took a close second in 1:09.85, while Liu Hongjiao wound up third in 1:10.09.
