LONDON, England, July 30. THE Chinese diving contingent is two-for-two in gold medal opportunities after day two of diving at the 2012 London Olympics. Cao Yuan and Zhang Yanquan clinched the gold medal for China with an Olympic record 486.78 points in the men's 10-meter synchronized event.
The impressive finale featured Cao, 17, and Zhang, 18, overcome a strong start by hometown team Tom Daley and Peter Waterfield of Great Britain. The British lead after three of the six rounds, but China powered home to the finish.
Mexico's German Sanchez Sanchez and Ivan Garcia Navarro finished with silver after tallying 468.90 points, while the U.S. tandem of Nick McCrory and David Boudia picked up the Americans second diving medal with a 463.47 total. That is two medals for the U.S. after a 12-year drought. Daley and Waterfield faded to fourth with 454.65 points total. The bronze is the second for McCrory's family. His uncle Gordon Downie won a bronze for Great Britain in the men's 800 free relay at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Downie was in attendance in support.
The Mexicans put together one of the toughest dive lists in history, including an inward four-and-a-half with a degree of difficulty of 4.01. The dive had never been performed in Olympic competition, and drew the Mexican team 95.94 points to move from fifth after round three into silver.
Cuba's Jose Antonio Guerra and Jeinkler Aguirre (450.90), Russia's Ilya Zakharov and Victor Minibaev (449.88), Germany's Patrick Hausding and Sascha Klein (446.07) and Ukraine's Oleksandr Bondar and Oleksandr Gorshkovozov (433.32) also competed in the finale.
