British Long Course Nationals: No New Additions to British Olympic Squad on Final Day

SHEFFIELD, England, June 23. NO additional swimmers earned individual Olympic qualifying berths, but Adam Brown posted a time worthy of 4x100m freestyle relay consideration in London as the British Long Course Nationals wrapped up today in Sheffield.

Brown dipped under Simon Burnett's winning time of 49.33 from the March trials in the men's 100 free with a time of 49.16, making him eligible to compete on Great Britain's 4x100m freestyle relay next month. Grant Turner finished right behind in 49.25. Brown swam a 49.13 in the preliminaries, while Turner touched in 49.01, just off the FINA A standard of 48.82. Jak Scott also broke the 50-second barrier with a third-place effort of 49.87.

Only a handful of Olympic roster spots were available, as the rest of the British Olympic team was chosen at the March trials. British Swimming requires second place finishers to meet the FINA A standard in their respective events in order to make the squad.

Several swimmers already qualified for London won individual events today. Jemma Lowe, who has already qualified for the Olympic team in the women's 100m and 200m fly, posted the top time in the 200m fly with a 2:08.59, more than two seconds in front of Elena Sheridan. Tilly Gray swam a 2:12.47 to pick up third. Lowe swam a 2:06.37 in March to solidify her place on the roster.

Andrew Willis, who will also represent Great Britain at the Olympics in a few weeks, placed first in the men's 200m breast with a 2:11.91. Willis swam a 2:09.33 in March to secure his spot on the team. Richard Webb (2:12.47) and Joseph Parker (2:15.95) placed second and third, respectively.

Aimee Willmott captured the women's 400m IM title with a solid swim of 4:38.68, not far off her time of 4:37.48 that earned her a spot on the British team in March. Lucy Spencer finished ten seconds back in 4:48.86 while Kate Hutchinson was third in 4:49.93.

Sergii Frolov swam the fastest time in the men's 1500m free with a 15:19.36, ahead of 2012 Olympic team member Daniel Fogg (15:26.29) and Jack Burnell (15:28.46). Fogg and David Davies, the fifth place finisher here in 15:32.09, will represent Great Britain in London.

In other action, Lucy Ellis took charge at the halfway point of the women's 400m free en route to a winning time of 4:09.68, just beating out Anne Bochmann's 4:09.90. Eleanor Faulkner came in third at 4:11.64.

Lewis Coleman and Xavier Mohammed were neck and neck throughout the men's 200 IM final, but it was Coleman who made a late charge into the wall to nip Mohammed at the finish, 2:00.78 to 2:00.87. Thomas Litten finished a distant third with a 2:03.43.

Jack Marriott captured the non-Olympic men's 50m fly in 23.77. Antony James finished second in 23.93 while Adam Barrett was third (24.57).

In all, six swimmers were added to Great Britain's Olympic roster this weekend: David Carry (400m free), Ieuan Lloyd (200m free), Chris Walker-Hebborn (200m back, 100m back), Marco Loughran (200m back), Stephanie Proud (200m back) and Siobhan-Marie O'Connor (100m breast).
