Spanish Open National Championships: Mireia Belmonte Garcia Doubles, Sets Another Spanish Record

MALAGA, Spain, April 1. MIREIA Belmonte Garcia wrapped up an impressive meet with another Spanish record during the final day of the Spanish Open National Championships.

Belmonte Garcia dropped a 4:05.77 in the women's 400 free. That time smashed the 4:07.02 set by Melanie Costa Schmid last year. She moved to seventh in the world rankings with the performance. Costa Schmid placed second in 4:07.08, just off her personal best to take 15th in the world rankings. Lydia Morant Varo picked up third in 4:09.71.

Belmonte Garcia cruised to victory in the women's 200 fly with a 2:06.95. That performance jumped her to fifth in the world rankings. Ellen Gandy (2:05.95), Jemma Lowe (2:06.37), Cammile Adams (2:06.76) and Jessicah Schipper (2:06.93) are the top four swimmers this year. Judit Ignacio Sorribes finished second in 2:08.59, while Otylia Jedrzejczak earned third in 2:10.54. Ignacio Sorribes moved to 11th in the world with her swim.

Duane Da Rocha Marce lowered the meet record in the women's 200 back with a 2:10.00. That effort cleared her 2009 mark of 2:10.89, and upped her to 15th in the world rankings. Osk Gustafsdottir took second in 2:12.33, while Lydia Morant Varo finished third in 2:12.42.

Rufino Regueira Suarez topped the men's 200 back in 2:00.07, while Matteo Giordano touched second in 2:01.77. Juan Miguel Rando Galvez wound up third in 2:03.40. Carlos Peralta Gallego won the men's 200 fly in 2:00.76, while Albert Puig Garrich took second in 2:01.21. Alexis Marquez Rivas earned third in 2:01.88. Marc Sanchez Torrens hit the wall in 3:56.58 for the men's 400 free title. Alex Sanchez Garcia (3:57.27) and Yerai Lebon Iriarte (3:58.72) completed the top three.
