Passages: NC State's Mike deGruy, 60 -- February 7, 2012

RALEIGH, N.C. - Former NC State ACC Champion and All-American diver, and renowned cinematographer, Mike deGruy, was killed in a helicopter crash in eastern Australia on Saturday. The Santa Barbara, Calif., resident was 60.

During his time at NC State, deGruy was a four-time ACC Champion and an All-American. He won the ACC Championship in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events in 1973 and 1974. He was also and All-America selection during those seasons.

DeGruy was an award-winning cinematographer who won multiple Emmy and British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards. He worked for National Geographic, and had spent three decades making documentary films about the ocean.
