Ryosuke Irie Posts Swift Backstroke Times To Close Western Australia Championships -- January 21, 2012

PERTH, Australia, January 21. ON the final day of the Western Australia Championships, Japan's Ryosuke Irie put together a strong backstroke leadoff for his team's relay.

Irie dropped a 53.32 100-meter back leadoff in Itoman's 400 medley relay victory with Irie, Daiki Sakata, Yuta Kimura and Sho Shotodate posting a time of 3:38.99. Irie's swim pushed him to the top of the world rankings this short year. Matt Grevers (53.55) and Camille Lacourt (53.59) were the top two heading into today.

Irie also turned in a quick time in the men's 50 back with a 25.24 to win the sprint backstroke event earlier in the evening. He bettered Ashley Delaney (25.59) for the top swim in the early year. The swim gave Irie his third iteration of the Western Australia All Comers record in the event. Earlier, he'd set the record with a 25.54 during prelims before clocking a 25.43 during semis. Irie still has work to do to catch the Australian All Comers record of 24.81 set by Delaney in 2009.

In other competition, Tamsin Cook, 13, won the women's 400 free in 4:29.34, while Shotodate touched in 50.25 to win the men's 100 free. Miyuki Takemura took home the women's 100 back in 1:01.70, while Dai Sakata clocked a 1:02.84 to claim the men's 100 breast title. Fumiko Kawanabe posted a 2:28.47 to capture the women's 200 breast, while Bria Throssell hit the wall in 26.05 for the women's 50 free title. Zachary Bevin, 13, endured in the men's 1500 free to win in 18:13.93.
