Ous Mellouli Sustains Rib Injury, Arab Games Participation Doubtful

LOS ANGELES, California, December 7. TUNISIAN Olympic gold medalist Ous Mellouli tweeted out last night that he has sustained a rib injury, and that he is doubtful to compete at the Arab Games.

"I popped a rib head in my thoracic cage," Mellouli tweeted. "Chest pain is awful. I might pull out of Arab Games next week. #BadDay"

Just 10 hours later, Mellouli decided to still attempt to train.

"About to jump in the water," Mellouli tweeted. "Dreading the pain that's about to hit me."

Mellouli is best known for winning the Olympic gold medal in the men's 1500 free at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, stopping Grant Hackett from becoming the first man to threepeat an event. Not only did he upset Hackett in the process, he became the first African male swimmer to ever win an Olympic gold medal in an individual swimming event. Previously, the South African men's 400 free relay had won team gold at the 2004 Olympics.

Mellouli went on to win the men's 1500 free world title at the 2009 World Championships in Rome, but has been having a tough time of late with the arrival of China's Sun Yang on the scene. Sun won the men's 1500 free at the 2011 World Championships, breaking Hackett's historic world record in the process.
