Pro Dual Meet 1: East Takes First-Day Lead Over West, 110.5-92.5; Darian Townsend Wins Pair -- November 16, 2011

ANN ARBOR, Michigan, November 16. THE initial competition of the Professional Swimming League kicked off with some strong in-season swimming as the first night of long course meter racing took place at the Pro Dual Meet 1. The meet is being streamed live at SwimmingWorld.TV.

West's Darian Townsend was the only two-time winner of the evening with a 2:01.29 in the men's 200 IM, while also capturing the 200 free in 1:50.14. He beat East's Wu Peng handily in the 200 IM as Wu clocked a second-place 2:02.11, while West's Charlie Houchin gave Townsend much more competition in the 200 free with a second-place 1:50.15.


Wu went on to win the 200 fly with a time of 1:59.62, while Houchin also earned second in the distance fly with a 2:02.47. East's Jason Dunford topped the 50 fly in 23.96, and finished runner-up to West's George Bovell, 22.77 to 22.82, in the 50 free.

East's Eugene Godsoe turned in a 54.64 in the 100 back for the title, while East's Clark Burckle won the 100 breast in 1:02.15.

Godsoe then led the East's 200 medley relay victory with a 25.55 backstroke split with Burckle (28.46), Dunford (24.03) and Brunelli (22.50) closing out the 1:40.54 for the win. Alex Hetland had the top breaststroke split with a 27.94 for his third-place squad for the West, while his teammate Bovell ripped off a 22.17 for the fastest anchor leg.

As far as the financials for the evening, Townsend walked away with the top cash tally with $600 from a pair of victories. Wu and Dunford both wound up with $450 from the first evening of swimming, while Brady, Houchin, Godsoe, Burckle and Bovell each earned $300 tonight. Johnson snared $150, while Brunelli, Savulich, Basson, Doak, Hetland, Coville and Castro each picked up $50 for their third-place performances.

Relay events, as the meet organizers explained, were for pride and did not have dollar amounts attached to finishes.
