Australia State Teams Age Group Short Course Championships: Four Meet Records Fall in Knockout Rounds

CANBERRA, Australia, September 17. THE Australia State Teams Age Group Short Course Championships began with six titles being decided. Meanwhile, four swimmers set meet records during prelims of the 50 sprint knockout events including a breaststroking Hansen taking home a record.

QLD started out with a 1-2 effort as Chelsea Gillett (4:15.24) and Chelsea Gubecka (4:15.67) topped the girls 13-14 400 freestyle event. NSW's Meg Bailey rounded out the top three in 4:18.48. VIC's Mack Horton then dominated the boys 14-15 400 free timed final with a 3:55.72. NSW's Ryan Leonard took second in 4:03.30, while teammate Jake Hodgetts placed third in 4:04.34.

QLD's Leah Neale turned in a 4:10.72 to win the girls 15-16 400 free title, while NSW's Laura Crockart (4:11.28) and Alicia Caldwell (4:14.33) earned second and third-place points. NSW's Hugo Morris cruised to victory in the boys 16-17 400 free event with a 3:51.14. That swim was faster than the 3:51.94 Wally Eggleton used to win the event in 2010. VIC's Ben Schreiner finished second in 3:53.32, while QLD's Jordan Harrison wound up third in 3:55.16.

In relay action, NSW's Leanne Wright, Georgia Miller, Alicia Caldwell and Ami Matsuo won the girls 16-and-under 800 free relay crown in 8:01.35. Meanwhile, QLD's Ridge Grimsey, Regan Leong, Cameron McEvoy and Andrew Digby took home the boys 17-and-under 800 free relay title in 7:18.49.

Meanwhile, the preliminary rounds of the knockout 50s took place today. Tomorrow, the top four from each event will compete, with the top two from each event going for the sprint titles on the final day.

WA's Brianna Throusell set a meet record in the girls 15-16 50 free with a 25.13, while NSW's Elise Pidutti clocked a 32.35 to set the meet mark in the girls 13-14 50 breast. VIC's Jessica Hansen earned a meet standard in the girls 15-16 50 breast with a 31.53, while VIC's Nick Groenewald posted a 25.65 in the boys 14-15 50 back for the meet record.
