Commonwealth Youth Games: Australia Earns Lion’s Share of Golds

ISLE OF MAN, September 10. ON day two of the short course meter Commonwealth Youth Games, Australia took home the bulk of the gold medals on offer.

England's Sophie Smith cruised to victory in the women's 200 IM with a 2:12.49, while Northern Ireland's Sycerika McMahon touched second in 2:13.97. Australia's Kotuku Ngawati finished third in 2:15.12.

Australia's Te Haumi Maxwell topped the men's 100 free in 48.48, while Wales' Ieuan Lloyd picked up second in 49.59. Scotland's Alisdair Stirling earned third in 49.94.

Australia's Ami Matsuo touched out teammate Adelaide Hart, 25.19 to 25.22, for the women's 50 free triumph. South Africa's Marne Erasmus wound up third in 25.86.

New Zealand's Corey Main claimed the men's 50 back title in 25.24. Grant Halsall, locally from the Isle of Man, finished second in 25.32. Australia's Robert Gerlach rounded out the top three in 25.38.

England's Elena Sheridan posted a 2:09.85 to win the women's 200 fly. Australia's Vanessa Puhlmann took second in 2:11.88, while England's Rachael Kelly placed third in 2:14.12.

Scotland's Craig Benson hit the wall in 2:11.15 for the men's 200 breast victory. Australia's Tommy Sucipto snared second in 2:14.27, while South Africa's Kurt Benjamin placed third in 2:20.88.

McMahon turned her silver in the 200 IM into gold in the women's 50 breast with a 31.47. Wales' Sara Lougher finished second in 32.12, while South Africa's Kelly Gunnell earned third in 32.20.

Australia's Chris Raven raced to a win in the men's 100 fly with a 53.09. South Africa's Hendrick Alberts placed second in 53.32, while New Zealand's Alexander Hancock wound up third in 53.54.

England's Phoebe Lenderyou stopped the clock in 59.77 for the women's 100 back crown. Australia's Adelaide Hart finished second in 1:00.06, while England's Georgia-Mae Hohmann turned in a third-place 1:00.91.

Australia's Jarrod Poort cruised to victory in the men's 1500 free with a 15:09.19. New Zealand's Matthew Hutchins took second in 15:17.91, while Australia's Eugene Tee picked up third in 15:21.90.

Australia's Remy Fairweather clocked a 4:06.82 to win the women's 400 free, while teammate Leah Neale finished second in 4:08.00. Wales' Sian Morgan wound up third in 4:09.71.

In relay action, Australia's Te Haumi Maxwell, Chris Raven, Robert Gerlach and Tommy Sucipto captured the men's 400 free relay in 3:20.01. Compatriots Ami Matsuo, Remy Fairweather, Adelaide Hart and Leah Neale earned the women's 800 free relay title in 8:00.11.
