Jose Finkel Trophy: Third Finals Session In the Books, Daniel Orzechowski Nearly Cracks Top 25 in Semis

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil, September 1. THE third finales session of long course meter action at the Jose Finkel Trophy is in the books as eight gold medals were awarded this morning.

It wasn't as fast as his 17th-ranked 1:00.47 from prelims, but Joao Gomes Jr. easily won the finale in 1:01.40 in the men's 100 breast. Felipe Lima finished second in 1:02.23, while Henrique Barbosa wound up third overall in 1:02.41. Felipe Silva just missed the podium with a fourth-place 1:02.44.

Tatiana Sakemi followed with a winning time of 1:12.17 in the women's 100 breast. Renata Sander touched second in 1:12.73, while Beatriz Travalon placed third in 1:13.39 to edge Ana Carvalho (1:13.40) for the final podium spot.

Gabriel Mangabeira hit the wall in 53.21 to capture the men's 100 fly title. Thiago Pereira placed second in 53.59, while Henrique Martins placed third in 53.62. Fabiola Molina then won the women's 100 fly crown in 1:00.40. Daynara De Paula clocked a second-place 1:00.69, while Daniel Jesus picked up third in 1:01.00.

Joanna Maranhao topped the women's 400 free finale in 4:17.35. Poliana Okimoto took second in 4:20.58, while Virginia Bardach Martin placed third in 4:21.76. Juan Pereyra claimed the men's 400 free in 3:56.79. Lucas Kanieski (3:58.60) and Daniele Tirabassi (3:59.64) completed the top three.

In semifinal swimming, Etiene Medeiros led the way in the women's 50 back with a 28.99. Natalia Diniz (29.10) and Fabiola Molina (29.16) qualified second and third. Daniel Orzechowski just missed the top 25 with a top-seeded time of 25.32 in the men's 50 back. Fabio Santi (25.92), Guilherme Guido (26.12) and Glauber Silva (26.12) comprised the rest of the top four qualifiers.

In relay action, Flavia Delaroli-Cazziolato, Carolina Bergamaschi, Flavia De Lacerda and Michelle Lenhardt won the women's 200 free relay in 1:42.61, while Inge Dekker led all leadoffs with a 25.58 for her second-place squad. Bernardo Novaes, Cesar Cielo, Nicholas Dos Santos and Andre Dos Santos pocketed the men's 200 free relay title in 1:29.28.
