Caitlyn Moon Crushes YMCA National Record In 1500 Free At YMCA Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, July 28. CAITLYN Moon and Brandon Sweezer kicked off the 2014 YMCA National Long Course Championships with wins in the women’s and men’s 1500 freestyle during the first night of racing at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis.

Kishwaukee’s Caitlyn Moon got the meet started in record-breaking fashion, crushing Laura Simon’s 2009 national record of 16:59.47 in the women’s 1500 free with a 16:40.05. Moon dropped 26 seconds from her seed time, and topped second place finisher Verity Abel of Wilton by 21 seconds as Abel hit the wall in 17:01.61. Leah Braswell of York rounded out the top three in 17:09.32.

In the men’s mile, Rock Hill’s Brandon Sweezer dropped almost 10 seconds from his personal best to take the victory in 16:02.58, three seconds in front of Middle Tyger’s Heyward Brown, who touched in 16:05.67. Karl Bishop of Cheshire touched third in 16:06.17.

Through the first two events, Waynesboro Family YMCA leads the women’s team standings with 30 points, followed by York and York County YMCA (28) and Kishwaukee Family YMCA (24). Middle Tyger YMCA leads the men’s race with 43 points, ahead of Rock Hill Aquatics Center (39) and Countryside Ralph Stolle YMCA (32).
