Tualatin Hills Takes Home Team Title As Oregon Sectionals Conclude

GRESHAM, Oregon, July 19. TUALATIN Hills edged the University of Denver Hilltoppers for the combined team title tonight at the Mt. Hood Community College Aquatic Center, as the Speedo Western Section meet came to a close after five days of racing.

Tri City Channel Cat Lisa Bratton picked up her second win of the meet in the opening event, taking the women’s 200 IM victory in 2:18.37. Grace Carlson of Tualatin Hills posted a 2:19.54 to finish second, while Shelly Drozda of the Front Range Barracudas rounded out the top three in 2:19.60. Utah’s Rafael Alfaro took home the men’s title in 2:04.12, more than a second in front of Aces Swim Club teammates Andrew Hartbarger (2:05.41) and John Bushman (2:06.21).

Boulder Swimming’s Amanda Richey dominated the women’s 1500 free, winning by more than 22 seconds with a 16:57.70. Madeline Myers of the Jeffco Hurricanes was the next closest finisher, stopping the clock in 17:19.35. Adriana Palomino of Arizona Gold finished third in 17:24.13. Meanwhile, Penguin Aquatics’ Jared Graham came oh-so-close to breaking the 16-minute barrier in the men’s race, dropping six seconds from his personal best to take first in 16:00.67. Tyler Jones of Walla Walla Swim Club came in second in 16:15.01, just ahead of Helena Lions’ Peter Kotson (16:15.32).

In the women’s 50 free, Hawaiian Jasmine Alkhaldi crushed the field with a three tenth victory, completing the sprint in 26.00. Krista Duffield of Tucson Ford finished second in 26.33, while Samantha Wicks of the Boise YMCA moved up three spots to third with a 26.43. Kyle Robrock of the DU Hilltoppers got to the wall first in the men’s 50, dropping .44 from his prelim time to win in 23.20. Christian Feiler of Flatiron Athletic Club dropped eight tenths from his seed time to finish second in a personal best of 23.41. Aces Swim Club’s Daryl Turner just out-touched Flatiron Athletic Club’s Miles MacKenzie for third, 23.64 to 23.65.

Tualatin Hills’ Keaton Blovad, Prudence Rooker, Michelle Cefal and Grace Carlson took home the final women’s title with a 4:16.66 in the 400 medley relay. The Boise YMCA quartet of Samantha Wicks, Heather Harper, Jessica Bottleberghe and Sydney Johansen claimed second in 4:17.62, while Missoula Aquatic Club’s Hannah Leach, Mira Darham, Andrea Schmidt and Hailey Jacobson rounded out the top three in 4:23.09. On the men’s side, Andrew Hartbarger, John Bushman, Jake Markham and Daryl Turner brought home the 400 medley relay win in 3:49.70, ahead of fellow Coloradoans Kyle Robrock, Michael McCormick, Reed Mathews and Darian Brunetti of the DU Hilltoppers. Alexander Trompke, James Nguyen, Kristian Almberg and Tanner Schelling gave the Boise YMCA another top three finish with their 3:54.08 to close out the meet.

Tualatin Hills won the combined team title with 726 points, ahead of the DU Hilltoppers (663) and Aces Swim Club (605). Aces won the men’s title with 492 points, while Tualatin Hills took home the girls’ trophy with 544 points.
