North Coast’s Kendyl Stewart Shines With Meet Record to Close Fran Crippen Memorial TYR Swim Meet of Champions

MISSION VIEJO, California, June 29. THE Fran Crippen Memorial TYR Swim Meet of Champions came to a close in Mission Viejo with a big-time meet record from North Coast’s Kendyl Stewart.

Stewart blasted the women’s 100-meter fly field with a meet-record time of 58.52. That swim beat Dana Vollmer’s 2008 meet mark of 58.65, while also putting Stewart under 59 for the first time in her career. She entered today with a lifetime best of 59.06 from the 2011 U.S. National Championships. Stewart also just missed the top 20 in the world with her time, currently anchored by Daynara Paula and Alexandra Wenk’s shared 58.49s.

Mission Viejo’s Katie McLaughlin joined Stewart under 1:00 with a second-place time of 59.79. That’s nearly an in-season best, just off her 59.60 from the Mesa stop of the Arena Grand Prix. Brynne Wong rounded out the top three in the event with a 1:01.06.

Tabitha Baumann had a strong swim in the women’s 1500-meter free to win in 16:28.77. That performance put her 20th in the SwimVortex world rankings as Baumann owned the finale nearly the entire heat. Megan Rankin touched second in the event with a time fo 16:53.08, while Sam Harding clinched third in 17:00.49.

Trojan’s Maclin Davis had an easy speed win with a time of 54.34 in the men’s 100-meter fly. He’s been faster in season with a 53.65 from the 2011 NAC Summer Sizzler, but didn’t need that type of speed tonight. California’s Josh Prenot placed second in 54.71 with KING’s Mathias Oh taking third in 54.96.

Cascade’s Brooklynn Snodgrass put up a time of 1:00.81 to win the women’s 100-meter backstroke. That’s her second-best swim ever, behind only the 1:00.23 she clocked at the Canadian Trials earlier this season. Stewart continued her strong evening with a 1:02.23 for second overall, while Sam Wicks wound up third in 1:02.75.

NYAC’s David Plummer took a run at his meet and pool record of 54.19 from 2011, but settled for a 54.28 as he smoked the rest of the field in the men’s 100-meter back. UCSC’s Russell Wood turned in a second-place time of 55.73, while Jeffrey Swanston checked in with a third-place effort of 57.00.

Jordan Wilimovsky cut three seconds from his lifetime best in the men’s 800-meter free as he clocked an 8:05.87 for the easy win. That smashed his previous time of 8:08.40 set at the 2013 U.S. Open. Trojan’s Jessica Hardy, who is sixth in the world with a 1:06.86 from the Charlotte stop of the Arena Grand Prix, won the 100-meter breast tonight with a 1:07.97. That’s a big confidence boost for Hardy as the Olympic medalist had had a pair of losses to Canyons’ Abbey Weitzeil in the sprint freestyles. UCSC’s Fiona Doyle managed to take second in the finale with a 1:09.35, while her teammate Tianna Rissling finished third in 1:10.97.

By the slimmest of margins, Trojan’s Glenn Snyders clipped NCAP’s Chuck Katis, 1:02.22 to 1:02.23, in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke. Trojan’s Azad Al-Barazi touched third overall in 1:02.78. SoCal’s Ella Eastin overhauled the women’s 200-meter IM field with a time of 2:16.77 as no one else came even close. UBCD’s Erin Stamp touched a distant second in 2:19.08 with Mission Viejo’s Katie McLaughlin finishing third in 2:19.64.

Aquazots’ Corey Okubo finished the meet with his fourth meet title as he clocked a lifetime best 2:03.56 in the men’s 200-meter IM. That effort nipped his 2:03.81 from the Speedo Grand Challenge last month, and as he easily was the men’s MVP here in Mission Viejo. UBCD’s Jonathan Brown took second in 2:06.53 with Minnesota’s Jakub Maly claiming thir din 2:07.65.
