Bruno Fratus Smokes 50 Free at Richard Quick Invite

AUBURN, Alabama, June 28. ALTHOUGH Baylor’s Sam McHugh had the most impressive complete night with two golds and a bronze, Auburn’s Bruno Fratus kept up the Auburn sprinter banner with a sizzling 50 free at the Richard Quick Invitational.

Fratus, who is ranked second in the world in the men’s 50-meter free with a 21.45 from the Maria Lenk Trophy, put up a 22.35 to win the men’s sprint tonight by a wide margin. NYAC’s Adam Brown finished second in 22.93, while Auburn’s Marcelo Chierighini grabbed thir in 23.03.

Olympic silver medalist Amanda Weir picked up the women’s 50-meter freestyle title in 26.18. She was on cruise control as she beat Allyx Purcell of Aubur, who took second in 26.23. Bailey Scott wound up third in the splash-and-dash in 26.48.

Baylor’s Sam McHugh crushed the field in the men’s 200-meter fly with a time of 2:02.42. That’s his in-season best, clearing the 2:02.70 he set here just a year ago. Will Freeman touched second in 2:08.11 with Dynamo’s Derek Cox checking in third in 2:10.23.

McHugh doubled up with a 2:05.79 to top the men’s 200-meter IM. That’s just off his lifetime best of 2:05.37 from the 2013 U.S. Open, and crushed his in-season best of 2:08.05 from this meet last year. Auburn’s Michael Duderstadt took second in 2:06.85 with Will Glass placing third in 2:08.46.

In a battle of teammates, SwimAtlanta’s Lydia Jones touched out Haley McInerny for the women’s 200-meter fly title, 2:17.45 to 2:17.54. Emily Facchine raced her way to third in 2:18.56. Kaylin Burchell cleared her lifetime best in the women’s 200-meter IM with a 2:19.97 for the win. That’s better than her 2:20.63 from the 2010 Georgia State Championships. Auburn’s Ashley Neidigh took second tonight in 2:21.70 with teammate Sarah Peterson earning third in 2:22.11.

Bonnie MacDonald trumped the women’s 400-meter freestyle with a 4:18.81, while Neidigh took her second podium of the night with a 4:20.77. Zoe Thatcher rounded out the top three in 4:21.83. Anton McKee closed down the evening with a 3:57.84 to win the men’s 400-meter free. Cody Bekemeyer (4:01.65) and McHugh (4:02.39) finished second and third.
