Four Swimmers Double At BSS TYR Summer Classic

JACKSONVILLE, Florida, June 27. THE 2014 Bolles School Sharks TYR Summer Classic got underway last night with finals in the distance events and continued today with preliminary and finals action. Four swimmers – Joseph Schooling, Li Tao, Hayden Burns and Erica Laning – won multiple events in the senior division during the first two days of the meet.

Last night, a trio of Tennessee Aquatics teammates topped the field in the women’s 15-and-over 800 free, led by Erica Laning’s 8:57.62. Ashley Darby came in second at 9:09.13, while Natalie Widmer had the third-best time at 9:30.20. Hayden Burns, also of Tennessee Aquatics, had the best time in the men’s 15-and-over 800 free as he stopped the clock in 8:25.67. Jake Gibbons of Bolles came in second at 8:40.84, while Matthew Holmes of the CBS Islanders rounded out the top three in 8:46.39.

Tonight, Li Tao of the Bolles School claimed the women’s 200 IM title in 2:23.82, about a second and a half in front of Pine Crest’s Lindsey Swartz, who came in at 2:25.48. Susan Hynes of Old Dominion Aquatic Club rounded out the top three in 2:27.73. Andrea Kyriakidis actually had the fastest time of the day from the 15-16 division, finishing in 2:22.79. Bolles’ Joseph Schooling raced to the men’s title with a 2:02.51, almost five seconds in front of YMCA Hub Fins’ Samuel Stewart (2:07.09). Will Arthur of Tennessee Aquatics took third in 2:09.65.

Carolina Colorado of Bolles took home the women’s 100 back victory with a 1:02.60, comfortably ahead of Gisela Morales’ 1:03.87. Annika Kollevoll, also of Bolles, came in third at 1:07.36. Omar Pinzon made it a Bolles sweep of the 100 back, claiming the men’s title in 56.63. Teammate Jake Gibbons picked up another runner-up finish with his second place time of 59.13, while Samuel Stewart of YMCA Hub Fins earned his second top-three finish of the night with a 59.31 for third.

Bolles earned another first place finish in the 50 free, this time from Kasey Schmidt. Schmidt out-sprinted the field with a final time of 26.94, just over a tenth ahead of Planet Swim Aquatics’ Katarina Filova (27.07). Courtney Aycock of Tennessee Aquatics touched third in 27.72. Bolles’ Mario Todorovic held off teammate Caeleb Dressel to win the men’s 50, 23.77 to 24.25. Walker Higgins of Tennessee Aquatics hit the wall third in 24.71.

Li Tao of Bolles earned her second individual victory of the night with a solid swim in the 100 fly. Tao posted a final time of 1:00.82 to top teammate Carolina Colorado (1:01.67) and Manhattan Makos’ Maia Hare (1:05.17). Meanwhile, Joseph Schooling of Bolles added a second win to his victory in the 200 IM with a 54.63, denying teammates Omar Pinzon (55.34) and Mario Todorovic (55.35) a second individual win as well.

Tennessee Aquatics’ Ashley Darby posted the top time in the women’s 400 free final at 4:24.38, more than eight seconds in front of Bolles’ Claire Rasmus (4:32.95). Madeline Hoff of Bolles came in third at 4:36.03. Erica Laning of Tennessee Aquatics actually had the fastest time in the event on the women’s side with a 4:17.25 from the 15-16 division, her second win of the meet. Hayden Burns of Tennessee Aquatics picked up his second win of the meet after touching in 4:01.59 to win the men’s 400 free. Julio Galofre of Bolles (4:02.43) and Walker Higgins of Tennessee Aquatics (4:10.07) rounded out the top three.
