Arena Grand Prix Santa Clara, Results: Arkady Vyatchanin Wins Battle of Behemoths Against Matt Grevers in 100 Back

SANTA CLARA, California, June 22. TWO gigantic backstroke Olympians did battle in the men’s 100-meter backstroke with the Russian Arkady Vyatchanin taking down Matt Grevers at the Arena Grand Prix in Santa Clara.

Vyatchanin put up a time of 54.34 for the win, just off his ninth-ranked time of 53.81 at the Charlotte stop of the Grand Prix. Grevers, meanwhile, took second in 54.95. Grevers has been faster with a 53.72 at the Austin stop. Stanford’s Eugene Godsoe placed third in 55.41.

Gators’ Corey Main (55.54), SSTY’s Adam Mania (55.95), Wisconsin’s Drew teDuits (56.17), Hong Kong’s Geoff Cheah (56.63), BGSC’s Jack Blyzinskyj (57.64) and UCSC’s Russell Wood (57.72) also competed in the championship heat.

Bolles’ Omar Pinzon took home the consolation heat win in 56.32 with Machine’s Jack Conger taking second in 56.90. BlueFish’s Connor Green snared third in 57.17.

Mexico’s Ezequiel Trujillo Aviles finished fourth in 58.26, while California’s Jesse Ryckman (58.27), Wisconsin’s Ryan O’Donnell (58.59), SMST’s Matthew Klotz (58.98) and Ryan Gordon (59.17) also put up legal times in the B final. Dynamo’s Michael Taylor drew a disqualification.
