IRVINE, California, June 20. THE Irvine Novaquatics celebrated a national age group record in the 800 freestyle relay Thursday night while hosting one of three Southern California age group long course championships.

Owen Kao, Justin Nguyen, Kevin Tu and Hunter Hitchens posted an 8:00.81 to beat the 13-14 U.S. national age group record in the event by four seconds. Mission Viejo previously held the record with an 8:04.91 since 2010.

Splits:

Kao: 1:56.51
Nguyen: 2:01.71
Tu: 2:03.43
Hitchens: 1:59.16

Kao's leadoff leg beat his previous lifetime best of 1:57.78. It was especially fast, tying him for the 27th-fastest performance among 13-14 boys in history. He still has a long way to go to Tom Kremer's national age group record of 1:53.52, posted in 2009.

Kao, Tu and Hitchens previously teamed up for a short course yards national age group record in the 400 free relay with a 3:30.75 last year.
