SANTA CLARA, California, June 19. IN a close contest, The Woodlands' Michael McBroom managed to pick up the men's 800-meter free victory ahead of Club Wolverine's Connor Jaeger at the Arena Grand Prix in Santa Clara.

McBroom tracked down the distance freestyle title in 7:49.96 to move to third in the world rankings in the event. Jaeger placed just behind him with a 7:50.59 for fourth in the world. Only Gabriele Detti (7:42.74) and Gregorio Paltrinieri (7:43.01) have been faster this year.

Ryan Cochrane of Canada nipped his 12th-ranked season best of 7:57.22 from the Mel Zajac Canada Cup with a third-place 7:57.10 tonight. He still remains 12th in the world, as he has some room to make up with Yuto Sato (7:56.96) ahead of him.

NBAC's Matt McLean surged to fourth in the event with a 7:58.58 out of heat 2, just missing the top 20 in the world. Sean Ryan (7:59.31), Martin Naidich (8:02.50), Michael Klueh (8:02.59), and Matias Koski (8:03.44) also made the top eight in the timed final swim.
