SANTA CLARA, California, June 19. DENMARK's Lotte Friis cut seven seconds off her season best in the women's 1500-meter freestyle to win at the Arena Grand Prix in Santa Clara.

Friis, who had previously posted a 16:07.14 to rank second in the world with her time from the Charlotte stop of the Arena Grand Prix, posted a 16:00.35 to win this evening. That's just off what is now the second-best time of the year of Mireia Belmonte (15:58.07). Friis did not know, however, that she was engaged in a cross-country virtual match with distance star Katie Ledecky, who posted a world record 15:34.23 at The Woodlands Senior Invitational at the same time.

Canada's Brittany MacLean took second with a time of 16:10.26 to move to sixth in the world rankings, while Becca Mann of NBAC, who also trains with Friis in Baltimore, took third in the first heat with a 16:15.01. That's well off her fifth-ranked season best of 16:08.86 from the Charlotte stop of the Grand Prix.

Gillian Ryan (16:15.01), Emily Brunemann (16:39.43), Rachel Zilinskas (16:40.13), Kathryn Campbell (16:50.18) and Ayumi Macias Alba (16:51.37) rounded out the top eight in the timed final event.
