Matt Grevers Puts Exclamation Point on Southwest Classic Success

TUCSON, Arizona, June 9. OLYMPIAN Matt Grevers completed a successful in-season tune-up as part of the Southwest Classic hosted by his club – Tucson Ford Aquatics.

Grevers finished strong with a 54.30 to win the men’s 100-meter backstroke. That’s not far off his eighth-ranked season best of 53.72 from the Austin stop of the Arena Grand Prix. French backstroke star Eric Ress, who is now swimming for the Santa Clara Swim Club through 2016, took second in 56.07, while Tucson Ford’s Bryce Bohman snared third in 58.08.

Tucson Ford’s Taylor Schick nearly posted a lifetime best at the Southwest Classic for the second year in a row when she won the women’s 100-meter back in 1:03.89. That’s just off the 1:03.84 she clocked here in Tucson a year ago. Her teammate Bonnie Brandon finished second in 1:04.42 with Santa Clara’s Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou earning third in 1:06.35.

Tucson Ford went 1-2 in the women’s 200-meter breast as Emma Schoettmer clipped teammate Sara Borendame, 2:35.66 to 2:35.75. FAST’s Bailey Kovac finished third as the 15-year-old posted a 2:37.25. With Kevin Cordes sitting out the final day of the meet, Santa Clara’s Filipe Medeiros took home the men’s 200-meter breast title with a 2:22.58. Gold’s Antonio Ramirez placed second in 2:24.11 with Wild’s Connor Lambert claiming third in 2:27.93.

Santa Clara’s Aidan Burns dropped a huge amount of time off his personal best in the men’s 100-meter fly with a 56.65 to win the event. That’s much faster than his 59.39 from the 2013 PC Super League Championships. Tucson Ford’s Brian Stevens took second in 56.93 with Gold’s Mark Jurek earning third in 57.02.

FAST’s Bailey Nero hit the wall in 1:03.02 to win the women’s 100-meter fly, while Santa Clara’s Courtney Monsees touched second in 1:03.44. LCAT’s Dorottya Lennert rounded out the top three in 1:03.55.

Monsees bounced back in the women’s 200-meter IM with a 2:21.34 for the win. Scottsdale’s Taylor Ruck took second in the event with a 2:21.98, while Brandon wound up third in 2:22.31 for her second podium of the night.

Tucson Ford’s Michael Meyer earned the men’s 200-meter IM crown with a time of 2:04.65 as he beat the field by more than three seconds. Santa Clara’s Eric Ress managed a second-place time of 2:07.86 with Tucson Ford’s Eric Solis placing third in 2:08.43.
