Kevin Cordes Cranks Out 1:01 in 100 Breast at Southwest Classic

TUCSON, Arizona, June 8. TUCSON Ford’s Kevin Cordes put up the top time in the men’s 100-meter breast at the Southwest Classic with a 1:01.82 in prelims, but had some summer school duties to attend to as he scratched the final.

Cordes is definitely taking his schooling serious as this is his second academic-related scratch in the past month or so. He also missed the first day of the Mesa stop of the Arena Grand Prix for school.

In Cordes’ absence, Gold’s Mark Jurek won the event in 1:09.07 with Ford’s Zach Hojnacki taking second on 1:13.21. Ty Dang of Gold placed third in 1:14.30.

Local superstar Matt Grevers powered his way to victory in the men’s 50-meter freestyle with a 22.96, while sprint specialist Brad Tandy took second in 23.18. Alec Lezcano of Desert Thunder wound up taking third in the splash-and-dash with a 23.86.

Tucson Ford’s Bonnie Brandon just missed a lifetime best in the women’s 200-meter freestyle to kick off the night. She won in 2:03.50, just off her 2:03.12 in the event at last year’s Southwest Classic. That’s her fourth time in the 2:03s. Santa Clara’s Sarah Shimomura, 16, clocked a second-place time of 2:04.91 with 25-year-old teammate Courtney Monsees checking in with a third-place 2:05.36. Notably, Gold’s Shae Nicolaisen, 13, posted a personal best for fourth in 2:06.32. That trumped the 2:06.80 she clocked at the Speedo Grand Challenge a week ago.

Santa Clara’s Aidan Burns, 16, claimed third title of the meet with a winning time of 1:54.16 in the men’s 200-meter free. New teammate Eric Ress, who will be swimming for the Santa Clara Swim Club through 2016, took second in 1:54.21. Michael Nunan raced to third in 1:55.11.

Tucson Ford’s Sara Borendame cleared 1:12 for the first time in her career in the women’s 100-meter breast as she won in 1:11.83. That beat her previous best of 1:12.01 from the 2012 NCSA Junior Nationals. FAST’s Bailey Kovac touched second in 1:12.64 as the 15-year-old whacked plenty of time off her lifetime best of 1:14.33 set at the Mesa stop of the Arena Grand Prix. Tucson Ford’s Emma Schoettmer took third in 1:12.96.

Tucson Ford’s Taylor Schick just missed her personal best in the women’s 50-meter free with a 26.39 for the win. That came up short of her 26.37 from the 2011 Georgia Senior Sectionals. She scored a bit of an upset with Tucson Ford’s Margo Geer taking second in 26.70. Brandon earned her second podium of the night with a 26.74 for third.

Tucson Ford’s Shannyn Hultin raced to victory in the women’s 400-meter IM with a 5:01.23, while FAST’s Bailey Nero touched second in 5:03.95. WETT’s Sydney Hirschi picked up third-place honors in 5:05.08. Tucson Ford’s Michael Meyer claimed the men’s 400-meter IM title in 4:28.08. Michael Messner (4:32.96) and Antonio Ramirez (4:35.29) rounded out the top three.

Tucson Ford also broke a FINA Masters World Record in the men’s 800-meter freestyle relay. For more on that record, click here.
