ASU’s Tristin Baxter Leads Distance Day at Cactus Classic

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona, May 26. THE distance dynamos of the Maricopa County area and beyond took to the water this Memorial Day morning at the Cactus Classic with Arizona State’s Tristin Baxter leading the way amongst the women.

Baxter took home the women’s 800-meter freestyle finale title today in 9:06.88, while VAST’s Nika Fellows placed second in 9:27.54. UCSC’s Shayla Pogany, 15, rounded out the top three in the event with a 9:40.05. Thomas Ottman, 16, of Scottsdale won the men’s 800-meter free title in 8:46.30. Aaron Apel (8:54.05) and Ryan McCoy (8:57.59) wound up second and third in the timed final.

In age group action, Isabella Wylie, 12, won the 11-12 girls 800-meter free in 10:27.85 with Leila Rosin (10:39.83) and Hanna Henderson (10:44.89) finishing second and third. In the 11-14 division, Taylor Ruck, 13, posted the top time with a 9:30.15 that would have placed her third in the overall event. Daniela Liera (9:34.86) and Kate Rendall (9:36.30) went 2-3 in the age group swim as well.

UCSC’s Jeremy Bilic, 14, captured the 11-14 boys 800-meter free crown in 9:07.78 with Anderson Cline (9:28.18) and Collyn Gagne (9:31.33) taking second and third. Daniel Simmons, 12, topped the 11-12 boys 800-meter free in 10:04.94, while Matthew Leblanc (10:07.64) and Nicholas Salvino (10:29.53) placed second and third.
