SCOTTSDALE, Arizona, May 23. A pair of veterans showed up to increase the star power of the Scottsdale Cactus Classic tonight as Roland Schoeman and Matt Grevers both put up a few swims.

Proving once again, he can sprint anything, Phoenix Swim Club's Roland Schoeman captured the men's 50-meter breast in 28.19. Tucson Ford's Matt Grevers, typically a freestyle/backstroke threat, took second in the event with a 30.63, while Jim Sheehan snared third in 30.70. Tucson Ford's Kevin Cordes posted a 29.48 in prelims but scratched finals.

Grevers, who already has been a sizzling 53.73 to rank eighth in the world in the men's 100-meter back, put in an easy 56.80 for the win tonight in the event. Kaleb Gould took second in 1:01.85 with Max Yakubovich earning third in 1:02.14.


Zac Dalby earned the men's 200-meter fly title in 2:07.74 with Max Yakubovich finishing second in 2:12.21. Christopher Webb of Tucson Ford placed third in 2:12.45. Meanwhile, Andrew Porter won the men's 200-meter free in 1:59.53 with Kaleb Gould just behind in 1:59.72. Ty Fowler finished third in 2:00.24. Thomas Ottman won the men's 400 free in 4:11.02 with Ty Fowlery (4:14.90) and Christopher Webb (4:16.27) taking second and third.

Tucson Ford's Sara Borendame topped the women's 50-meter breast in 34.98 with Samantha Wong (36.22) and Melanie Busch (37.04) taking second and third. Elizabeth Pepper dominated the women's 200-meter fly for Tucson Ford with a 2:17.80, while teammate Lauren Neidigh took second in 2:25.05. Nicole Matheson wound up third in 2:32.42.

Felicia Anderson claimed the women's 100-meter back title in 1:06.78, while Victoria Toris (1:08.18) and Allie Engstrom (1:09.49) finished second and third in the finale. Results from the women's 400-meter free are unavailable.
