Michael Andrew Obliterates 13-14 National Age Group Mark in 200 Backstroke

CLEARWATER, Florida, April 16. COMPETING in his final meet in the 13-14 age group, Michael Andrew kicked off the NASA Showcase Classic by lowering his 200-yard backstroke national age group record twice.

In prelims, Andrew posted a 1:44.02, taking more than a second off his previous record of 1:45.13. That was just a warm-up for what would follow in finals, where he broke through the 1:44 barrier with a 1:43.15.

Though Andrew will be 15 years old on Friday, he’s allowed to continue racing as a 14-year-old that day and Saturday in Florida under meet rules. His 200 back today puts him within three seconds of Ryan Murphy’s 15-16 national age group record of 1:40.90.

Andrew wasn’t able to lower his national age group record of 19.76 in the 50 free, recording a 19.93 in prelims before dropping a 19.87 in finals.
