FEDERAL WAY, Washington, March 12. The Speedo Sectionals in Federal Way got off to a fast start this evening in Washington with the 1000 freestyle and 800 free relays.

In the women's 1000, the top five all put down times under the 10-minute mark. Jeffco Hurricanes' Madeline Myers secured the win with a 9:46.67. That's a personal best and the first time under 10 minutes for the future University of Denver swimmer.


Boulder's Amanda Richey, a future member of the University of Pittsburgh Panthers, took second with a 9:54.01. Fifteen-year old Natalie Ward of Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics (9:58.67) just touched out Arizona Gold's Adriana Palomino (9:58.87) for third. Boulder's Brittney Beetcher posted a 9:59.72 for fifth.

Antonio Ramirez of Arizona Gold won the men's 1000 with a 9:06.30, knocking more than 13 seconds off his personal best. Corvallis Aquatic's Brandon Shreeve, committed to the University of Utah, clocked in at 9:07.23. Arizona Gold's Ben Olszewski chopped more than 21 seconds off his personal best for a third-place time of 9:12.61.

Arizona Gold (Jocelyn Wang, Isabel Whited, Adriana Palomino, Shae Nicolaisen) and Jeffco Hurricanes (Morgan McCormick, Erin Metzger-Seymour, Zarena Brown, Madeline Myers) tied for first in the women's 800 free relay, with both teams clocking in at 7:22.72. Scottsdale Aquatic Club (Victoria Toris, Taylor Ruck, Kathleen Shannahan, Hannah Holman) hit the wall in 7:23.13 for third.

Bellevue (Todd McCarthy, Edward Kim, Brandon Nguyen, Stephen Boden) posted a 6:39.17 for first on the men's side. Tualatin Hills (Liam Metzsch, Jonathan Zoucha, Jackson Wahl, Patrick Mulcare) took second with a 6:39.90, while hosts King Aquatic Club (Mathias Oh, Thomas Anderson, Tommy Thach, Koppany Kolyvek) snagged third with a 6:42.21.

Arizona Gold leads the combined team standings after day one with 144 points. Jeffco Hurricanes sit second with 82 points, with hosting King Aquatic Club is third with 77 points.
