AUSTIN, Texas, January 20. THE backstroke events featured some of the closest races of the Arena Grand Prix stop in Austin, and Arkady Vyatchanin of the New York Athletic Club was part of them as he posted fast in-season times.

Vyatchanin, an Olympic medalist for Russia at the 2008 Olympics, has broken ties with his homeland and is looking for a country to represent by the time the Rio Olympics start in a little more than two years. In this interview with Swimming World, he doesn't mention the specific countries that he pursued, but he talks about the options that failed to materialize, and his determination to make sure he's racing in Rio.

His times in Austin indicate that he's on track to push for a medal in two years, and he discusses the work he puts in under coach Gregg Troy. After losing Ryan Lochte as a training partner recently, Vyatchanin talks about how that has affected his daily workout routine.
