Michael Andrew Ties, Then Breaks, Own 13-14 U.S. National Age Group Record in 50 Free

AUSTIN, Texas, January 18. THIS morning at the Arena Grand Prix in Austin, 14-year-old professional swimmer Michael Andrew tied, then broke, his own 13-14 U.S. National Age Group Record in the 50-meter freestyle.

Andrew turned in a 23.38 this morning to make his way into the B final out of heat nine of the splash-and-dash swims in Austin. That matched a similar 23.38 he clocked last year at the Speedo Junior Nationals during the B final of the event. That downed his previous mark of 23.47 from earlier in 2013. Andrew then turned around and broke his 50-meter freestyle record with a scorching 23.19 time trial.

Andrew owns a truckload of national age group records. In long course meters, he holds the 11-12 50 free (25.09), 50 fly (26.22), 13-14 50 free (23.38) and 200 IM (2:05.13). In short course events, he’s the top age group swimmer in the 10-and-under 100 IM (1:01.31), 11-12 50 free (21.85), 100 free (47.95), 50 breast (27.46), 50 fly (23.56), 100 IM (53.86), 13-14 100 back (48.68), 100 breast (55.43) and 100 fly (47.47).
