Fran Crippen Honorary Mile Recognition at Speedo Tom Dolan Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, December 15. NIGHT four of the 2013 Speedo Tom Dolan Invitational, hosted by Nation’s Capital Swim Club at the University of Maryland, ended in style.

The night kicked off by honoring each of the boys and girls 13-14 and open mile event winners with “Fran Crippen Honorary Mile” titles. Crippen, an 11-time All-American and US Open Water team member, tragically passed away on October 23, 2010 during an open water race in the United Arab Emirates. His death was due to overexertion exacerbated by high water temperatures. Following his death, the Crippen family created the Fran Crippen Elevation Foundation in his honor with the mission to support athletes while they pursue their athletic dreams.

The first event of the night was the girl’s open 1000 yard freestyle. North Carolina Aquatic Club’s Madison Homovich took the win at only 13 years of age. Consistently pushing sub-30 50 splits allowed Homovich to drop 20 seconds from her entry time and clock a winning 9:45.39 for the win. Homovich also took second in the girl’s 13-14 200 IM later in the night.

Central Buck’s Allie Szekely took her first title of the night in the girl’s open 200 backstroke. After a disappointing summer in the breaststroke events, Szekely told Swimming World TV that decided to transition her training focus to backstroke. And it paid off, as shown by her 1:54.37 victory time in the 200 backstroke, over four seconds ahead of Annie Boone (NCAP). Later, Szekely took her second individual title of the night in the girl’s open 200 IM with a 2:00.34.

WEST’s Jalen Ramjohn proved himself as a sprint sensation, taking two individual event titles tonight in the boy’s 11-12 age group. He first won the 100 IM with a 56.63, and then came back to claim the 100 butterfly title in at 56.08. These wins add to his individual titles in the 50 freestyle and 50 backstroke on the second night of finals.

Alexandra Walsh (CPAC) set a new Potomac Valley Resident and Open record in the girl’s 11-12 100 IM with a 58.30. Walsh took her second individual title of the night in the 100 butterfly with a 57.17.

To close out the night, new 11-12 100 backstroke National Age Group record holder Destin Lasco (PVA) broke the 1:50 barrier in the 200 freestyle with a spectacular 1:49.05 for the win.
