USA Swimming Winter Junior Nationals Will Feature Blazing Swims; Psych Sheets!

GREENSBORO, North Carolina, December 9. IT’s going to be a busy weekend with the USA Swimming Winter Junior Nationals on tap as the top age group swimmers in the country, and for that matter — the world, will head to the Greensboro Aquatic Center Dec. 12-14.

There is little doubt that the headliner for the meet will be Bolles’ Caeleb Dressel. Dressel surprised the college recruiting community recently by electing to stay home and attend Florida when almost everyone thought it was a two-school race between the two UTs in Texas and Tennessee. Dressel is entered in a boatload of events with the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles as well as the 100 fly and 100 breast.

In fact, the 50-yard freestyle has to be the most star-studded event of Juniors this weekend with 17-year-old Dressel leading the way with a 19.29 seed time, while 15-year-old Ryan Hoffer of Scottsdale could make some serious noise with a 19.55 seed. Meet-record holder Brett Ringgold of North Texas stands third with a 19.73, while Paul Powers of Splash is fourth with a 19.91. No doubt, Ringgold’s meet record of 19.73 from last year is living on borrowed time. Both the 17-18 and 15-16 U.S. National Age Group records are likely to fall in the event.

Even more National Age Group records should be on the chopping block in the relays. Although Nation’s Capital fired off their Katie Ledecky-led artillery last weekend at Nationals in the 15-18 relays, teams like SwimMAC and Dynamo are going to be putting together their own record-hunting teams.
