Jonathan Rutter Turns Some Heads With YMCA Record

ATLANTA, Georgia, July 31. ONE of the longest standing records in the YMCA books fell tonight as Powel Crosley’s Jonathan Rutter turned some heads at the YMCA Long Course Nationals.

Rutter broke one of the better YMCA marks in the books with a blazing time of 2:17.86 in the men’s 200-meter breaststroke. That performance cut more than a second off Marty Hubbell’s 1992 record of 2:19.22 set for Countryside YMCA. The swim definitely gave Rutter a bump in terms of college recruiting as the second-ranked swimmer from the state of Ohio (according to CollegeSwimming.com) might have just scored some extra scholarship money with that swim.

Kishwaukee’s Caitlynn Moon touched out Greater Flint’s Anna Wujciak, 2:03.77 to 2:03.87, in the women’s 200-meter freestyle finale. Moon doubled up with a win in the women’s 800-meter free when she charged to an 8:57.44, winning by more five seconds in the process.

Meanwhile, Upper Main Line’s Maddie Zimmerman captured the women’s 100-meter fly in 1:01.07, while Middle Tyger’s Justin Mehl followed with a 55.42 to win the men’s 100-meter fly.

Middle Tyger’s Savanna Faulconer dominated the women’s 200-meter breaststroke by nearly five seconds with a winning time of 2:31.75 after clocking a 2:31.95 in prelims.

Another close contest featured Triangle Area’s Colin Ellington holding off of surging Nikita Bondarenko of West Cook in the men’s 200-meter free. With Bondarenko coming home in 29.02, Ellington had built enough of a lead to win 1:53.29 to 1:53.46.

Somerset Valley’s Lindsay Temple (58.46), Julieyanna Parker (58.53), Holly Christensen (57.68) and Katrina Kuhn (57.51) popped a 3:52.18 to win the women’s 400-meter freestyle relay, just missing Middle Tyger’s 2012 record of 3:51.98.

Meanwhile, Triangle Area’s Bailey Maloney (53.52), Alex Carson (52.70), Colin Ellington (51.03) and Ben Mayes (52.91) checked in with a 3:30.16 to win the men’s 400-meter free relay with Middle Tyger’s Justin Mehl (52.94), Brad Oberg (52.69), Andrew Delahunty (53.15) and Robert Borowicz (51.91) finished close behind with a second-place 3:30.69.
