VITORIA, Spain, July 24. THE 50 Americans participating in the swimming competition at the FINA world championships are departing from Vitoria in northern Spain today, headed to Barcelona for final preparations for the year's biggest competition.

With the meet starting Sunday, the team will get three-and-a-half days of training in the competition pool, as well as the training pool just outside the Palau Sant Jordi, before racing commences Sunday morning. For teammates Anthony Ervin and Natalie Coughlin, it will be their second world championships in Barcelona, having competed in the 2003 event. Bob Bowman was at the meet in 2003 as well, coaching his superstar swimmer Michael Phelps.

Before departing for Barcelona, the athletes, coaches and support staff gathered for the official team photo. As you can see from this photo posted on Chloe Sutton's Twitter account, all 43 of the pool-only swimmers were there, with the men in red shirts and women in blue. The coaches, managers and other staff members dressed in gray shirts.

Perhaps it should not be surprising that Ervin, in the second row behind Karlee Bispo and between Michael McBroom and BJ Johnson, is the only one to dare to be different in the team photo. While everyone else is looking toward the camera, Ervin's attention seems to be fixed on something behind the group -- or maybe he turned to ask teammate Conor Dwyer a question at the most inopportune time.
