GRESHAM, Oregon, July 16. THE first session of the Western Region Long Course Sectional Championship opened with the 800 free event at the Mt. Hood Aquatics center.


Boulder's Amanda Richey, bested the field at 8:50.38 by outracing her competition DU Hilltopper Haley Rowley, (8:53.12) and Arizona Gold's Isabel Whited, (8:58.13) in the final heat. The men's 800 free title went to Arizona Gold's Antonio Ramirez, (8:26.88). Corvallis' Brandon Shreeve, (8:27.00) and Tualatin Hills' Cameron Stitt, (8:29.28) rounded out the field of competition.

The opening night 800 free relay did not disappoint with Tualatin Hills Swim Club, (Grace Carlson, Michelle Cefal, Prudence Rooker, Blaise Wittenauer-Lee) coming in at 8:26.00. Arizona Gold, (Isabel Whited, Shae Nicolaisen, Adriana Palomino, Katarina Simonovic) tried to chase them down but came up just short at 8:28.39

On the men's side ACES Swim Club, (Jake Markham, Jason Hartbarger, Connor Croan, Jared Markham) took it to the competition by turning in a 7:39.18. University of Denver Hilltoppers, (Carter Griffin, Darian Brunetti, Ryan Holly, Konnor De Venecia) raced with Arizona Gold by posting a time of 7:44.14 while Arizona Gold, (Michael White, Mark Jurek, Antonio Ramirez, Alexander Schultz) turned in a time of 7:45.49.

The first full day of action takes place tomorrow, with a full day of preliminary qualifying and finals action ahead.
