Results at the USA Swimming nationals prompted several changes to the roster, which was first filled after the 2012 U.S. Open. At the recent USA Swimming nationals, Kevin Cordes, BJ Johnson, Tom Luchsinger, Eugene Godsoe, Megan Romano and Chelsea Chenault earned promotions from the World University Games team to the FINA world championship team based on their performances in Indianapolis. With Romano and Chenault scheduled to only swim one relay each in Barcelona, USA Swimming is allowing them to compete at the World University Games as well, per selection procedure rules.
Filling in for Cordes in all three breaststroke events in Russia will be Indiana's Cody Miller. Johnson's spot in the 200 breast will be filled by Mike Alexandrov, who was already on the team in the 50 and 100 breast. James Wells will swim for Godsoe in the 50 and 100 backstrokes, and existing World University Games team member Kyle Whitaker will swim the 200 fly in Tom Luchsinger's place.
Romano and Chenault will be able to swim multiple events in Russia. Romano is entered in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles, as well as the 100 backstroke in Russia, then will head to Spain to race in the 400 free relay. Chenault will handle the 200 and 400 freestyles at the World University Games before taking on relay duty at world championships in the 800 free relay.
Catherine Breed withdrew from World University Games due to injury, and was replaced in the 400 free relay by Andi Murez.
